Categories

Organising the catalogue into categories and subcategories, assigning them to products and using them in filters.

Categories organise the catalogue as a tree: a root category, for example "Services", can contain subcategories such as "Consulting" and "Training". They are used to filter the product list and to find an item quickly in a document. They are independent of the purchase categories used for suppliers.

What you will do

  • Create a category, then a subcategory.
  • Assign a category to a product.
  • Edit or delete a category.

The Product Categories screen

From Products, click Categories. The Product Categories screen lists the tree with, for each row, the category's colour or image, its name, the Default badge where applicable, the number of Products and the actions. The Search a category... field filters by name; « Tout replier » (collapse all) and « Tout déplier » (expand all) close or open the subcategories. « Retour aux produits » (back to products) returns to the list.

Creating the first category
  1. As long as no category exists, the screen invites you to create one.
  2. Click New category.
  3. The New category form opens.
  4. The name is the only required field.
  5. Leave None (root) or choose the parent category.
  6. Save creates the category and adds it to the tree.
Action Effect
Subcategory (+ icon) Creates a child category of the row.
Edit (pencil) Opens the category form.
Delete (bin) Deletes the category after confirmation.

Create a category

  1. Click New category.
  2. Fill in the Name (mandatory, for example Services, Drinks...).
  3. Leave Parent category on None (root) or choose the category to file it under.
  4. Choose a Color and add a Description if useful.
  5. Click Save. The message "Category created." confirms.

To create a subcategory directly, use the + icon on the parent row: the Parent category field is prefilled.

Note

A category's display order, icon and image are set on web.novadesko.com. The apps show these settings but do not change them.

Assign a category to a product

In the product form, the Category field offers every category and subcategory in a single list, or None. A product belongs to only one category. The product list then shows the category as a badge, and the Category filter lets you display a single branch of the catalogue.

When importing products, the category column takes the category name; see Products and services.

Edit or delete

  • Edit: change the name, colour, description or parent, then Save. The message "Category updated." confirms. Moving a category under another parent moves its subcategories with it.
  • Delete: the « Supprimer la catégorie ? » (delete category?) window spells out the consequences, for example "The category "Services" and its 2 subcategory(ies) will be deleted. 5 product(s) will be left without a category." Confirm with Delete. The products are not deleted, they only lose their category.
Warning

Deleting a root category takes its whole branch with it. To keep subcategories, move them to another parent first with Edit.

Tip

On web.novadesko.com, the Catalog menu also contains Tags, free labels that can be applied to several products without any tree constraint. Keep categories for the structure of the catalogue and tags for ad hoc groupings (promotion, season).
